I have a weird obsession with everything travel-sized. I would use tiny bottles of everything if it were economically and financially convenient. The good thing about  my strange love, is that I travel often, and thus get to use mini shampoos and soaps on a fairly regular basis.

A few things to understand about fun-sized products is they are not just for traveling. They are great for purses, backpacks, your office and the car. Also know that travel-sized is not just for toiletries but for food, drinks, medicine and games as well.

The question is…Why use it for a trip?

The answer to that is most airlines now charge you to check a bag (Southwest and JetBlue still have free checked baggage). To avoid the extra $25-$30 fees many travelers have taken to downsizing their luggage and carrying on their suitcases. There are two problems with carry-on suitcases: the first, and obvious one, is there is less room and more limited weight requirements.

The second is TSA security restrictions on the amount of liquid allowed to be carried on the plane. They have a 3-1-1 rule, which means no container can hold more than 3.4 oz of liquid/gel, all containers must be placed in 1 clear ziplock bag, and each traveler may only have 1 bag.

CVS travel aisle

I won’t lie to you, in preparing for my trip to LA, I was very excited to go to CVS to pick up my little shampoos and mouthwash.

There are a ton of websites that sell travel-sized things including snacks, cosmetics, games and medicines. The easiest way to get them though is to just pop into any local pharmacy, Target or Walmart and you will find shelves of fun things you didn’t know existed.

*Big hint though- the cheapest way to get mini toiletries is to take the complimentary ones from hotel bathrooms when you stay, you can easily create a collection of all different types of products to have in stock for your next trip*

I will leave you today, fellow travelers, with an article on how to avoid as many airline baggage fees as possible…enjoy and Happy traveling!
